Asia Fest · Dragon Boat Racing

Race team fast facts.

New to dragon boat racing? Don't worry — most of our paddlers are. Here's everything your team needs to know before you hit the water at Asia Fest.

The basics

Dragon boat racing is a 2,000-year-old tradition and one of the most exhilarating team experiences you'll ever have — equal parts power, rhythm and camaraderie. No prior paddling experience is required. If your crew can show up, listen and paddle together, you're ready to race.

Your crew

20 paddlers per boat, including a minimum of 8 female paddlers, plus 1 drummer. Up to 5 alternate paddlers are allowed.

Age

Paddlers must be at least 13 years old; drummers at least 12. No experience necessary.

The boat

Each dragon boat is 42 feet long with 10 rows seating 20 paddlers. A steersperson guides it with a 9-foot oar from the stern.

Race format

Teams compete in 3 heats over a straight 300-meter, 4-lane course. Division winners are honored at a post-race ceremony.

Frequently asked questions

Who sits where?

The drummer sits at the bow facing the crew, setting the pace and keeping everyone in sync. Twenty paddlers fill the ten rows, and a steersperson stands at the stern with a long oar to keep the boat on course. Tip: pick a lighter teammate to be your drummer.

Do we need to practice?

Yes — and it's part of the fun. Registration for practice dates and times is available online. Sessions cover paddling fundamentals and racing basics, so bring your whole team, including your chosen drummer. Practices are held at Lake Crabtree County Park or Koka Booth Amphitheatre.

What does our team need to bring?

Each registered team should bring a 10'x10' tent, chairs, tables and coolers to set up your home base for the day. Dress for the weather, wear shoes that can get wet, and pack plenty of water and snacks for your crew.

What does Asian Focus provide?

We've got the gear covered: paddles, life vests, boats, drums and an experienced steersperson for every team. You just bring the energy.

Where is race day?

Race day takes place at Koka Booth Amphitheatre — a beautiful lakeside venue and one of the best places in the Triangle to spend a day on the water.
